Oman Launches a New Era of Clean Energy with the Arrival of Its Largest Wind Turbines Peaking at 200 Meters Muscat – Sultanate of Oman

November 25, 2025

In a moment that embodies national pride and reaffirms Oman’s rising position as a regional leader in renewable energy, OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE), a subsidiary of OQ, celebrated the arrival of the first batch of the wind turbines for the Riyah 1 and Riyah 2 wind projects at Duqm Port on Tuesday, 25 November 2025. These turbines mark the beginning of a historic transformation, as the Riyah projects, currently under construction, collectively constitute the largest wind farms in the Sultanate.

The shipment includes record-breaking components, that set new benchmarks for Oman’s renewable-energy sector. The tip height of each turbine reaches 200 meters above ground and features the longest wind turbine blades ever to arrive in Oman, each measuring an impressive 90.2 meters, along with the tallest wind turbine towers ever installed in the country. Each Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) has a capacity of 6.5 megawatts, generating enough clean electricity to power approximately 2,400 Omani households per year.

These unprecedented achievements elevate the technical standards of Oman’s renewable-energy capabilities and reflect the Sultanate’s commitment to integrate best-in-class technologies into its national infrastructure.

During the site visit at the Port of Duqm, attendees observed the sophisticated logistics and transportations processes required for handling these large components. They were briefed on the turbines’ advanced systems, installation phases, and operational features, followed by an on-ground technical tour that provided close-up insights into the scale and complexity of the projects. The arrival of the turbines represents a powerful indicator of Oman’s accelerating progress in expanding clean-energy production and diversifying its energy mix in line with Oman Vision 2040 and the national Net Zero 2050 targets.

Once operational, the wind farms will supply clean power to Petroleum development Oman (PDO)’s operations and will significantly reduce operational costs and cut CO2 emissions delivering substantial environmental and economic value to the nation.

This milestone strengthens Oman’s credentials as a regional clean-energy hub, demonstrating the country’s increasing ability to attract world-class technologies, implement large-scale renewable-energy infrastructure, and drive long-term sustainable growth.

Eng. Ghalib Al Maamari, Acting Chief Executive Officer of OQ Alternative Energy, stated: “The arrival of the first wind turbines for the Riyah 1 and Riyah 2 projects marks a defining moment in Oman’s renewable-energy journey. This step is more than a logistical milestone. It is a proud national accomplishment and a clear demonstration of Oman’s unwavering commitment to building a cleaner, more sustainable future. With these turbines now on Omani soil, we are ready to move into the next phase of implementation, driven by a shared determination to deliver world-class renewable-energy projects.”

He added: “These projects will reinforce the nation’s energy ecosystem, strengthen supply resilience, and open new avenues for future expansion in green hydrogen and renewable-energy technologies.”

Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President for Renewables at TotalEnergies, said: “Our partnership with OQ Alternative Energy represents a cornerstone in advancing the energy transition in Oman. We are proud to support the development of the Riyah 1 and Riyah 2 projects, which together will deliver 234 MW of clean power, strengthening Oman’s renewable-energy infrastructure and contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions.”

He emphasized that collaboration between national institutions and global expertise enhances innovation, supports knowledge transfer, and drives sustainable progress. The Riyah wind projects stand as a model of successful international-local partnership, directly supporting Oman’s Net Zero 2050 aspirations.

Eng. Mohammed Ali Al Aghbari, External Affairs, Government Relations and Communications Manager at PDO, said: “PDO is working to ensure the long-term sustainability of its oil and gas operations, while targeting to source 50% of its power needs from renewables by 2030. This target will be driven by investments in renewable energy, including the two flagship wind farm projects, reflecting PDO’s environmental responsibility and its commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.”
